Mission Activities

Habitat for Humanity, Eastern Shore of Virginia
Through the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge program, members and friends of East Hills Moravian Church, Bethlehem, PA worked with the Eastern Shore of Virginia affiliate of Habitat for Humanity and helped build housing for families in need. Eight youth, ages 14 to 21 and seven adults participated in the weeklong trip.
Workdays started with a 6:30am wake-up, breakfast, devotions led by pairs of youth, and drive to the site. Work on the houses and sheds included the installation of flooring and floor sheathing, wood framing and trim, vinyl siding and soffit, aluminum fascia, and asphalt felt paper and roofing. Work also included painting and cleaning tasks. The days typically ended with a trip to a nearby church camp for much-needed showers (and maybe some basketball or canoeing) and return to the church for cooking dinner, fellowship and relaxation. The day-off included a trip to visit the beach and ponies at Assateague, MD followed by the boardwalk in Ocean City, MD.
The week culminated in a return to the work site on our way home, where we had a chance to take group photos, meet the future homeowners and present them with a stained glass Moravian star, which was hand made by a member of our congregation.
The team seemed very satisfied with the trip, and members of East Hills Moravian Church have already begun planning for a return trip next year.
