CARING MEAL MINISTRY

You may remember that some time ago we announced the
beginning of a new ministry at East Hills. We asked
for volunteers to prepare meals to be taken to people
who would benefit from having a home cooked meal. In
practice we found that it was difficult to coordinate
the time of the need with the actual preparation of the meal.

With the adoption of new procedures, we now have a
working Meal Ministry. This ministry exists to
serve caregivers who do not have time or energy
to cook, persons newly returned home from the hospital
and others in need of an easily prepared meal. We pack
food from church dinners and individual donors into
convenient size containers, which are then frozen.
Persons receiving food can then store several servings
worth in their home freezer and need only to heat them
in order to enjoy a wholesome, tasty meal. Should we
run short, a special batch of food can be made.

We need your help in three ways. First, if you would
like to contribute food to the New Meal Ministry
please let us know first so that we can advise you
of our needs. Secondly, if you or someone you know
might benefit from this ministry please contact our
coordinator, Louise Snyder, at avon.louise@verizon.net.
All information will remain confidential. Finally, we
ask that persons not remove food from the church freezer
section labeled "Meal Ministry" without telling Louise
or Pastor French as it might deprive another member of
the congregation of a meal already promised them.

The 2010 Holiday Craft Faire

Our Holiday Craft Faire is well underway
with 3/4 of our spaces rented already to
wonderful crafters, some returning favorites
and some exciting new ones.
In preparation for the faire we are in need of:
Someone to coordinate the "goodie bags". Most of
the masters are made so this involves updating
the masters, making the copies and setting up the
meeting(s) for the stuffing. A list of volunteers from
previous stuffings is available.
If you are able and willing, please contact
Louise Snyder at avon.louise@verizon.net for details.
We are doing something new with the HCF program this year. We are offering the opportunity to sponsor a portion of our
program. This is an inexpensive means of advertising and
supporting our church at the same time. We print approximately
1,000 programs which reach many more than 1,000 people.
The cost of having your business card or a personal message
published in the program is $25.00. To take advantage of
this opportunity contact Louise Snyder.
Faith Matters
For several weeks now congregation members have been meeting in small groups to share their insights into our common ministry here at East Hills. Below we share a summary of some of the perspectives we have heard so far.

On being a Christian... Being a Christian is about compassionate love that moves us to action. "We are the hands and feet of Christ." It is about taking risks for one's faith. It is about spiritual fulfillment.

On successful ministries... Ministries are successful when we engage in them out of a sense of Joy and when they benefit from "passionate leadership." In the Moravian Church, we "have not been afraid to let go or change a mission if it's not working or has passed its usefulness." Ministries are successful when persons are asked what their gifts are and how they think those gifts could be utilized in the church. "I need to be asked to help out... I don't naturally offer to be part of a ministry."

On the role of the pastor... The pastor should serve as a role model and empower people. The pastor should lead our congregation's stewardship emphasis. "The pastor should not be 'the show;' we are 'the show,' the pastor is the director and God is the audience."
