PARISH NURSE NEWS
EAST HILLS MORAVIAN CHURCH

Notes From the Nurse
By Susan Kriebs, Parish Nurse

EXERCISE

As the old Nike saying goes "Just Do It." Get off the couch, put down the remote and move. Better yet, get off the couch and manually turn off the TV.

One of the best things you can do for yourself is to get outside and walk. You don't have to join a gym to get healthy. Walking is the #1 participation sport worldwide. Do you wonder why? Well, here are a few good reasons:

  • It's easy to do, you don't need special equipment or advanced degrees, and you can even do it when you travel!

HELPFUL HINTS FOR WALKERS:

  • Posture: Head up, spine straight, and look straight ahead (look down occasionally to avoid obstacles), keep arms and shoulders loose.
  • Breathing: take deep, regular breaths. If difficult to breathe easily, slow down. You may be walking too fast.
  • Pain: If pain or discomfort, check with your Doctor (always good to check first with your health care provider before starting any exercise program).
  • Stride: Long, smooth strides. Your motion should be effortless with arms swinging at sides for balance.
  • Shoes: They are the single most important piece of equipment for a walker. They should have the following characteristics:
    • Should provide comfort and support
    • Should provide wiggle room for your toes
    • Should have firm support at the heel
    • Be made of breathable material
    • Be light weight

If you are a pro or if this is your first attempt at exercise, you should always STRETCH before and after you walk. It helps to loosen your muscles and reduce your chance of injury. You can also do a 5 minute walking warm-up. Start slowly and increase your pace to begin your normal routine. After you walk, slow down gradually and do a 5 minute cool down walk.

Now that you know how easy it is to get started, "Just Do It" - 30 minutes a day is all it takes! You can even do 3 ten minute walks with the same benefits. Think of the wonderful gift you are giving yourself - your good health!

A New Ministry at East Hills

Do you like to make healthy casseroles and soups? Perhaps you would like to join a group of volunteers who could be called upon to provide a meal for someone in our church family. As our members recover from illness or surgery, or find themselves in difficult life situations, they benefit from the loving concern of others. This can be displayed in the form of visits, and also in the form of warm soup or a nourishing meal, something simple to heat when energy to cook is lacking. To be a part of this caring ministry, contact Louise Snyder. To receive a visit or some life-giving food, contact Louise or Pastor Christine.
