Church Point of Privilege:

A Pastoral Essay

But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.
Psalm 13:5

I'll confess that February would land with a thud at the bottom of the list if you asked me to rank the months of the year, starting with my favorites. Winter seems to be at its gloomiest. The thrill of the chill has worn off by now, and the charm of a snowy morning has long been replaced by the reality of the "wintry mix." Valentine's Day holds possibilities - both romance and chocolate are known to alter moods - but it's asking a lot of a minor holiday to pull me from my major funk. That would take a miracle...

... Or at least a good story about a miracle. When I came across this report, it gave my heart a bit of a jolt and opened my eyes to things impossibly possible. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation:

A 74-year-old woman who had been blind for 25 years awoke in a British hospital after suffering a heart attack and could see again. Doctors were at a loss to explain how Joyce Urch, who lived in a world of shadows and near darkness since 1979, had recovered her sight after the heart attack 16 months ago. Doctors at Walgrave Hospital in Coventry who spent three days battling to save her life called it a "miracle."

The Daily Telegraph newspaper showed the white-haired Mrs. Urch, bright eyed and beaming, in the arms of her husband, Eric, after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary last weekend. "When I first came round I just opened my eyes and shouted 'I can see, I can see.' When I looked in the mirror I said 'Oh.' I said to Eric. 'You've got older haven't you?' But I thought I'm old myself, my husband must be too," she was quoted as saying.

Mrs. Urch had been unable to see her five children properly since they were young adults and for the first time she was able to look at her 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Urch said, "I love going out now. I can look around and see the trees and squirrels and pigeons."

This little news story out of England is loaded with miracles. How about the longevity of the Urch's marriage? How about the 20 children, grandchildren and great grandchildren descended from Joyce and Eric? How about the joy that comes with truly appreciating God's creativity as it's displayed in the backyard?

Oh, yeah. There's the whole no-longer-blind-after-a-heart-attack part of the story, too. Incredible. If that could happen, then there's most certainly hope that I could find happiness and contentment... even during the month of February.
