| So, as I was pondering (after midnight, in the wee hours of Newsletter Mailing Day) what to write on this page, it struck me that I had forgotten to include the birthday listing for
October. With all of the other pages already photocopied and stacked neatly in the church office, the action plan was clear: Birthdays would be prominently featured on Page 1! God's blessings on all of you beautiful birthday people. (And please don't feel slighted if your November-September birthday did NOT make the front page. God doesn't love you any less!)

I'm not fond of making mistakes (and had I left out the birthday information, I would have had it kindly pointed out by many alert readers). And yet, that's what human beings do. We goof up. We flub. We take the mulligan. Then we gulp, apologize, and try to better the next time, knowing that God forgives us sometimes more easily than we forgive ourselves.

I like what Michael J. Fox says in his autobiography. Lucky Man:
"I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence, I can reach for; perfection is God's business." How very true that is. Only God is perfect! But excellence is worth striving for, and if you go to scripture to find out what the most excellent way is, you'll discover that the way mapped out is the way of LOVE. The MOST EXCELLENT we can be is to try to embody all of the qualities of LOVE that Jesus shows us (I Corinthians 12:31 and all of Chapter 13). Look it up!
