The Christmas Putz at East Hills Moravian Church

What is a Christmas Putz?

A Putz is a centuries-old German tradition continued today in many Moravian churches. The putz (pronounced pootz from the German word meaning to make beautiful) tells the story of the Nativity through narration, music and small illuminated scenes nestled among moss and rocks. Viewers sit in a darkened room and watch the story of the birth of Christ unfold.

The display is large and takes many hours to construct every year. Many of the items used in the display are handmade or have been donated by members of the congregation.
